Travel app: Power plugs of foreign countries

When traveling, it is always good to know everything about the power plugs used in the destination countries. You will need to know the type of socket and voltage used there, then compare it against your own devices. Not every country uses the same voltage as your home country, and while traveling in the Philippines recently, I was even presented with a home that used BOTH 110V and 220V. Now that’s bizarre. To check the compatible voltage of your devices, … Continue reading

Bersih 2011 in photos

9 July 2011 – this day will be emblazoned in the minds and hearts of Malaysia for years to come. It’s a sign of protest. A sign of democracy. A sign of change. A sign of oppression. And hopefully, a sign of freedom. Bersih 2.0 is a movement for the people, by the people to fight for reform of the Malaysian electoral process. It is independent of political parties and it strives for fairness. On the media front, it was … Continue reading

I used pirated software

Yes, I admit it – I was a software pirate. I started at a young age. I bought CDs entitled 100 programs for software design (honestly, who needs 100 programs? Duh, I was a dumb Chinese dude – a bit smarter now). Then, when torrent sites emerged, I scoured the Internet for cracks and had access to almost any software in the world. But those days are over. I have repented. The realisation that I was no better than a snatch … Continue reading

Standard medicine for traveling

When I travel, I always ensure my first aid kit is packed into my bags. It pays to be prepared, as you’ll never know when a headache will rear it’s evil head (hmm… is that a pun?), diarrhoea may strike, or you may accidentally cut yourself. So, the question is… what should you pack into a first aid kit? You don’t want to pack every type of medication, crutches and a wheelchair – so, what are the essentials? Feel free … Continue reading

Hidden fees for Firefly mobile bookings

The offering seemed simple, and being an explorer, I was convinced enough to give it a spin. Little did I know, I was going to be in for a surprise! Convenience my foot! More like conveniently hidden fees! It reminds me of the time I blogged about Tiger Airways trying to hide certain fees too – read about it here. With my iPhone, I logged onto m.fireflyz.com.my and was promptly redirected to flyfirefly.mobi. Everything seemed easy enough – aside from … Continue reading

Technology ruins romance

While randomly surfing YouTube today, I chanced upon a gem of a short video that speaks to most of us techies. Sad, yet hilarious at the same time. Want romance in this day and age? You’ve gotta move with the times! Love the cinematography!

Final thoughts about the HTC HD7 Windows Phone 7

Some have asked me what I like about the HTC HD7 phone – having used it for 2 weeks, the phone’s biggest attraction for me is the uber-awesome-fun-fantastic-jolly-amazing SCREEN! Its size, coupled with the clarity delivers a great experience for me. I’ve watched YouTube videos (you need to download the FREE YouTube app from the Marketplace), shown off videos I’ve created and devoured TV series on this amazing phone, I’d almost hail as a mini-TV. I’ve loaded up several episodes … Continue reading

Corporate companies and blogger engagements

These days, bloggers are almost heralded as mainstream media – they are treated princely, wined & dined and given exclusive privileges to events & products. There is no denying the strength a blogger can possess. Someone once compared a pastor of a church with a blogger. He estimated that a pastor needs 20-30 staff to help run a church that spreads its message to a congregation of 2,000 people, once a week. In comparison, an average blogger can reach an … Continue reading

thebackpackr.com gets a facelift

I guess it’s about time to upgrade the facade of the website. I’ve not been blogging too much, but a truckload of traffic comes via YouTube for Hackintosh write ups and for searches on how to clean the Ikee virus! And thus, a new chapter for thebackpackr.com unfolds – I vow to blog more regularly and talk about topics that will really be relevant for those interested in anything creative, technology and business. Any feedback or suggestions you’d like to … Continue reading
