When the Apple iPhone was first launched, there was no application that allowed inter-iPhone-messaging. Then came Ping! which stirred up the community somewhat, but was not wildly accepted. WhatsApp is a great application that is useful for instant messaging from iPhone-to-iPhone for FREE. It is akin to the Blackberry Messenger, and is a rival application to the much famed Ping, which picked up a huge following due to the $0 price tag when it first launched.
