World Cup 2010: The return of the fail whale

If you’ve been on Twitter over the last 3 days, you would surely have encountered the dreaded fail whale (if you don’t know what this is, you’re absolutely not Twitdicted… yet!). Here’s what a fail whale is, and it generally rears its head when Twitter is overcapacity, or not performing as it should.

We’ve just found out via Twitter engineer (@jeanpaul) that the cause of these outages is primarily due to internal sub-networks being over-capacity. He outlines 3 problems and 3 solutions for them. (Read the source article here)
3 PROBLEMS
1. Two …

Helping the homeless via social media

On the street I saw a small girl cold and shivering in a thin dress, with little hope of a decent meal. I became angry and said to God; “Why did you permit this? Why don’t you do something about it?” For a while God said nothing. That night he replied, quite suddenly:
“I certainly did something about it. I made you.”
For many months, I have been silently following a website that is interestingly called InvisiblePeople.tv. It is an interesting play on how humans shun away from looking at something they …

TEDxKL – Krishnakant Mane talks on open source software

Krishnakant Mane is a truly amazing young man who hails from Mumbai, India. He is a very accomplished visually disabled person, who has fought to overcome his weaknesses and maximize his strengths. During TEDxKL in June, I was fortunate to meet him and record his moving (and extremely funny) talk on the use of technology, open source software and how a disabled person can live a more normal life with the use of speech synthesis.
I think my favorite lines from here were with regards to how his laptop battery can …

iPhone 3G vs iPhone 3Gs camera comparison

Last weekend, I attended a wedding and had the opportunity to use 2 iPhones simultaneously to capture photos. @warrentan had just picked up his iPhone 3Gs the night before and it was still brand spankin’ new! Here’s a side-by-side comparison of how the photos turned out from both phones.
For the iPhone 3Gs, I did use the tap-to-focus on the subject feature. All photos are not touched up, and are saved at the highest quality after adding the watermark in Photoshop.
Initial observations are that the tap-to-focus on the iPhone 3Gs also …

BarCamp KL was an amazing event, with 100s of likeminded individuals crowding together at Inti College, just to bounce off each other’s passion. It was my first time attending a BarCamp and it was a fun-filled day of various activities.
It goes to prove that geeks are cool (most of us anyway…) and we have varied interests. There were sessions on how to Salsa, Espresso appreciation, sharing of holiday experiences, Kufi art and also a little about coding standards. Overall it’s just a gathering to network and meet others. A few …

Sound is half of your production. After the production, if sound is bad, what do you do? Reshoot? You can’t!
Make sure it is set up well at the start. Sounds and visuals are combined to give you the whole experience.

The thingy at the end is called a cat tail

Oh great… the secret is out now. It seems Lois Lane now knows the true identity behind Superman. iPhoto just had to spoil it by identifying them both. For those who don’t yet know, iPhoto ‘09 has a feature where it tries to identify the people in your photos automatically. It will then ask you to confirm whether it got it right or not.
When I first “heard” about the concept of this comic, it totally cracked me up and I knew I had to hunt it down and share it. …

I caught a webisode of David Heinemeier, partner at 37Signals who talks about making money via online means.
He speaks on the Googles, YouTubes and Facebooks of the world and how they are the rare breed of today. Realistically, he focuses on making $1,000,000 first, and retaining your life – rather than selling out and losing everything. Some billionaires really aren’t that happy at all… true?
Makes me self-actualize and think about where I’ve come over the last 9 years of building Integricity as a digital interactive agency and where I’d like …

What do Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird have that Gmail doesn’t?
The ability to read and write your email offline while on a flight!
Not anymore… perhaps.
Google for all its strength has wised up to the fact that business users NEED to be able to have their email with them when they travel to the desert of Bahariya (which I was at recently, while in Egypt) or on a flight between Singapore and New York. As such, they are trialling the ability to read, write and search through messages when not connected to …

If you’re a twitter-maniac and are following hundreds or thousands of Internet users – aside from the fact you’re quite crazy, you might want to streamline which tweets are prioritized over others. I can’t imagine having a tweet come in every minute or so and mess up your timeline.
Enter twitTangle which has the tagline of “untangling the mess of too many friends”. It allows you to assign ratings and tags to friends and based on those presets, you can filter what you want to see, and what you’d like to …
